A practical route to choosing a desk lamp

A useful desk-lamp choice starts with the task and the desk, not a popularity label. This site is still an early draft: it now contains twelve individual BenQ and OttLite product review records, including finish-only variant coverage, but its manufacturer-led catalogue scope and many observed products remain unfinished. Use this route to decide what you need and to read every specification with its limits intact; a result is a partial research shortlist, not a claim to every lamp for sale.

1. Define what needs light

Write down the actual work zone: a page or notebook, keyboard, craft surface, or a mix of paper and a screen. Note whether you need one concentrated spot or light spread across a wider area. A manufacturer's coverage width only helps if its stated illuminance threshold and measurement conditions suit the comparison you want to make.

2. Find a place for the lamp

Check the space on the desk, shelf clearance above it, monitor location, and the path the lamp head would need to move. A tabletop base uses surface area; a clamp can free some of that area but may be a separately purchased part and needs a suitable desk edge. A monitor light bar is a different kind of fixture from a complete desk lamp; do not assume their mounts or work areas are interchangeable.

3. Choose the needed range of adjustment

Compare arm geometry, joint locations and the lamp head's movement. A long two-section arm may reach around equipment differently from a short single-section support. Published maximum dimensions do not supply every possible head position, so look for installation diagrams or instructions if your desk has a shelf, cabinet or second display overhead.

4. Separate light output from control options

Compare the exact wording for lux, distance, width and color rendering. A central illuminance value and a width at a lower illuminance threshold answer different questions. Color-temperature settings, brightness steps and automatic modes describe controls, not a guarantee of comfort or task results. Prefer a manually adjustable lamp if you want to set a particular look yourself; choose an automatic feature only when its mode and sensor behavior match your routine.

5. Check the exact model and package

Record the retail name, US model identifier, finish and included parts. A compatible accessory may be sold separately, and a seller can bundle it differently. Match the package to the current manufacturer instructions; confirm any adapter, clamp or mounting hardware before placing an order. Do not use a series name alone as proof that two pieces fit.

6. Read limitations before making a shortlist

Our e-Reading Desk Lamp assessment separates a supplied base from a separate clamp arrangement. The Genie assessment documents its smaller listed envelope and explicitly says the BenQ desk clamp is not compatible. These are manufacturer-source-based comparisons, not hands-on tests. When the wider inventory and page checks are complete, this route will have more alternatives; until then, treat every match as a partial shortlist.
