Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Should an earlier model be included in the comparison?
Yes. The exact US BenQ buy page identifies MindDuo2-001 and marks its commerce type discontinued, so it is retained only when the visitor elects to include earlier models; current seller stock is not asserted.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the earlier MindDuo 2 use a clamp?
The manual and product sources document an optional compatible Desk Clamp, but not as an included package item. The manual limits desk thickness to 6 cm and says the clamp is not suitable for tubular material.
Explore this need in the finder →Does it meet the 35.4-inch width threshold?
BenQ lists a 95 cm width at 500 lux, and its overview describes 37.4-inch oval illumination above 500 lux at a 15.7-inch desktop distance with 10% light-level tolerance. These are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements.
Explore this need in the finder →Are both automatic reading modes documented?
The exact manual describes separate ambient-assisted reading/paper and screen-reading modes, alongside manual brightness and color-temperature settings.
Explore this need in the finder →Is the published color-rendering figure numeric?
The US specification page states Ra≥95. That meets the questionnaire's published threshold without implying an independent sample measurement.
Explore this need in the finder →Earlier U.S. model · research-based assessment
BenQ's MindDuo 2 is a child-focused study lamp whose appeal is easier to assess by its documented setup than by the name's eye-care language. It combines a broad light head, manual and ambient-assisted controls, a presence sensor, a supplied pedestal base and a compatible optional desk clamp. BenQ's U.S. store data identifies the exact model code as MindDuo2-001, but the U.S. buy page marks that commerce item discontinued. This review preserves its research value; it is not a statement that the lamp is currently stocked or a recommendation to buy an unverified offer.
Read the light figures with their conditions
BenQ's specification page lists a 95 cm width at 500 lux, Ra≥95, and 1,400 lux center illuminance at a stated height of 45 cm. The overview separately calls out an oval area 37.4 inches wide at more than 500 lux when the head sits 15.7 inches above the desktop, allowing a 10% tolerance in light level. Those are maker-supplied claims, not measurements from this site. They are not interchangeable: a center reading is not an area-width map, and the stated oval geometry should not be read as a promise that every point on a particular desk will be evenly lit.
For comparison, BenQ's current e-Reading Desk Lamp and Genie also publish at least 90 cm at 500 lux, but their listed width is 90 cm. MindDuo 2's stated 95 cm number therefore clears the same width threshold with a small margin, not an independent performance advantage. If your desk is deep, contains multiple screens or needs illumination at particular corners, ask for the exact footprint and light-field conditions rather than relying on the single width.
Modes and controls for paper and screens
The product combines manual adjustment with two automatic reading modes. Its exact user guide identifies an ambient-assisted reading mode and a separate screen-reading mode; the U.S. description also names the two reading routines. The specification table lists seven color-temperature settings from 2,700 K to 5,700 K, while the guide describes manual intensity and color-temperature adjustment through touch controls and a knob. The modes do not mean that the lamp senses whether a page or display is present. They are selectable lighting behaviors with differing settings, and their practical result still depends on where the head sits and what is around it.
A separate presence sensor can turn the lamp on as someone enters its detection area and turn it off after about three minutes without significant movement, according to the instructions. The lamp also has a 30-minute break reminder. Those are operation features, not proof of improved concentration, reduced eye strain or a clinical benefit. If a reminder sound or automatic light-on behavior would interrupt your routine, check the manual controls and whether the sensor can be disabled.
Choose the support plan before checking the arm
The maker documents two support arrangements: the supplied pedestal base or a compatible Desk Clamp, which is a separate accessory. The user guide gives a maximum clampable desk thickness of 6 cm and explicitly says the clamp is unsuitable for tubular material. That is useful clearance information, but it does not replace checking the edge profile, available grip depth, cable path or the exact accessory in an older seller's package. The clamp is not included merely because the lamp supports that arrangement.
There is another model-specific assembly detail worth retaining. The instructions describe round-shaft and square-shaft base versions and say their pedestal bases are not interchangeable; the assembly steps differ as well. A replacement base, clamp, seller photograph or listing for a related MindDuo family model should not be assumed to fit. Match the actual shaft and model code before ordering components. The same guide describes a solid, flat, stable base surface and careful tightening, so a narrow shelf or uneven surface deserves particular scrutiny.
The published outer dimensions are 36.4 × 44.4 × 44 cm, and net weight is 3.8 kg. These figures help screen out obviously undersized furniture but should not be mistaken for a base-only footprint or for the head's maximum reach. The product also has a 5 V / 0.8 A USB charging output and a 20 W maximum power specification. The outlet is not evidence of device compatibility or charging speed, and the adapter and cables should be checked against the exact offer.
What is and is not established
The source set supports the SKU, tabletop base, optional clamp, mode choices, listed Ra threshold, lux figures, dimensions and sensor features. It does not provide an independent photometric test, a complete measured reach map, desk-specific illuminance, a verified seller package, present availability, or proof that the pictured finish matches every surviving offer. The accessible source imagery shows a white MindDuo 2 with a long head, upright support and pedestal base; it is an appearance reference, not evidence of output or stability.
BenQ's product pages describe multiple movements and a ball joint, but they do not give a count of linked supporting-arm sections. This review therefore does not call it a two-section arm. If that specific geometry is essential, compare only models whose instructions or product diagrams identify the linked supports directly. Similarly, Ra≥95 is a published specification; it is not a sample measurement in a color-critical workspace.
Where it fits in a comparison
MindDuo 2 is most useful as an earlier reference for a study surface where paper and screen routines, ambient-aware settings and a broad stated width matter. It is not a simple substitute for the smaller Genie: the body dimensions, weight, arm form and optional clamp arrangement differ. Nor should it be confused with BenQ's monitor-mounted ScreenBar light bars or the newer ScreenBar Max, which uses a desk clamp for a dual-monitor workspace. MindDuo 2's own ordinary desk clamp is optional; ScreenBar Max's exact U.S. package lists its clamp in the box. The latter's product type and controls are different.
Keep the inclusion choice explicit: if earlier models are out of scope, MindDuo 2 should not appear among the current candidates. If you choose to compare earlier equipment, verify the exact MindDuo2-001 code, pedestal shaft version, accessories, adapter, condition and return route before making a purchasing decision. No price, stock, seller performance, ownership experience or hands-on result is claimed here.
